Democracy or death?

April 25, 2011

Why does it have to be like this?

To the rulers of the Yemen, Syria, Libya, Bahrain and others: either call yourself dictators or understand the role of a government.

A government is there to govern the people for the people and, in a democracy, that government is made up of the people.

You do not have any God-given right to rule the people for your own benefit. The country is theirs, not yours.

Many countries, including the UK, have a Monarchy. We even have a line in our National Anthem “long to reign over us”. But most Monarchs don’t actually rule any more; they are notional and token visible heads of state who are guided by, and by default give assent to, the democratic decisions of their elected governments.

No government is 100% free of corruption or error but, on the whole, they do their best for the people of their country.

So, are you leaders or dictators?
