Papua New Guinea women kill male babies to end tribal war

December 7, 2008

This is incredible, but true!

It’s the sort of solution to the problem of wars that many people might have suggested over the millenia (let’s ignore the relatively small number of war-mongering females) but would never seriously have considered a realistic possibility.

But, in Papua New Guinea, truth is stranger than fiction.

I’ve been told that this story is, in fact, untrue. Does anyone have a link which will verify the story or disprove it?

    Dear Driver Rob

you seem like a nice person, what with the snow and all. However, please, please stop spreading this absolutely absurd and untrue story. A comment was made to a reporter that the tribal fighting was so bad that women in this particular area felt so much despair, that they “might as well kill their boy babies”…this story was published in the PNG press, picked up by a Murdoch owned australian paper & then made its way to Fox. the story is NOT true. Has been debunked, and is just so exploitative and titallating. see the savageminds blog for in depth refutation. but you are doing a disservice to your readers and people like me who track PNG in the news/blog filters by repeating such unpleasant untruths about a culture that most people know little to nothing about. In addition, the picture you posted is really– um, how do I put this? kind of obnoixious given the context of the story and the deep suffering of a people that would even give rise to such a twisted, mangled version of their reality. peace to you in this season of brotherly and sisterly love…..

If you’re right then I apologise for misleading any readers by repeating what I found on an official international news site.
As soon as I verify what you’ve said I’ll remove the post; and thanks for pointing out my mistake.
