Birds in my garden

About a month ago I was delighted and quite excited to watch a green woodpecker, for the very first time, doing what green woodpeckers do – pecking a small hole in my lawn, dribbling saliva into it and attempting to lap up ants from the hole. I watched it for over half an hour. It was facinating. As I regularly have ants nests all over my lawn, making a mess of it, I thought this new avian carnivore would be a pretty good idea.

Not so.

I still have loads of ants nests, with their piles of fine sandy soil and consequent weeds, all over the lawn. Now I also have one or two holes in the lawn most mornings but never where the ants are obviously nesting!!!!!
