Another tunnel run

June 10, 2007

Ultima GTRAll looked set for a good run as we gathered on and near Chelsea Bridge just before midnight last night. A few drivers there I knew from other meets and a lot I’d never met.

The driver of this Ultima GTR had built it himself in 5 months of his spare time! Excellent effort. My photo does not do it justice.

The weather was warm, maps were issued and about 70 cars – mostly loud super cars – set forth.

Unfortunately, the print and route on the map was too small to read clearly, traffic was very heavy and we were very unlucky with red traffic lights. As a result we lost sight of the others and took wrong turns a few times. We did manage quite a few tunnels with them, however, and my co-pilot, Mark, seemed to be enjoying the noise and surges of acceleration as I tried hard to beat some of the red lights.

It had to happen in the end; we got so out of touch we missed a turning and ended up off the map! It was nearly 2 a.m. so we called it a day (night) and tootled off home. The sky was lightening and the starlings were singing as I pulled on to the drive.

Made a hell of a change from sitting at my desk, marking exam papers.
