VK4000 problems – users unite!

August 7, 2006

It’s obvious from the number of hits on this site that I am not alone in being pretty annoyed at having paid good money for a mobile phone which cannot do what it is supposed to do.

If we are to stand a chance of persuading Virgin Mobile to provide the tools or updates necessary then we need to stand together. A petition of lots of complaints and the subsequent publicity just might make it happen.

Help make it happen. Add your comments about your phone here.

  2. August 11, 2006 6:20 pm

I can’t honestly say I’ve looked for games for the VK4000. I doubt they have to be specifically for that phone. Has anyone downloaded any games that work?

I have just had an email from Virgin saying that USB drivers for the VK4000 will be available “soon”, but with no clarification as to how soon. The email said that one way of getting pictures to the computer is to email them, but at 30p a picture that’s hardly a practical solution! I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope that “soon” doesn’t take too long. A pity that such a great little phone was put on the market without proper software support.

I found this forum: http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=37324 and it seems owners of the D600 aren’t having much more luck. That phone may look identical to ours but, in many specific details, it’s quite different.
This site http://www.gamemobile.co.uk/samsung_d600_games.htm offers games, mostly cheap, some free but via WAP to your phone – which isn’t free. Downloading from PC to phone needs Samsung specific codes and instructions. We don’t have those for our VK4000 so we seem to be stuffed.

    To Vks.
We’re trying to help each other here. If you’d like to tell us which web sites and how you transferred them to the VK4000 and got them to work then I’d welcome your input. We all would.
If not, we’ll assume you posted just to be rude to someone and I’ll delete your post and report it as abusive.

I’ve always thought that Richard Branson and Virgin were guarantees of good productss and reliability. OK so the VK4000 has proved me wrong. Come on Virgin, do something about the unavailable cables, games, etc etc. The mobile is excellent but what about the support??

    Hi, Steve.
Did you read elsewhere on this blog that someone bought the Argos Bluetooth adaptor and got it to work? What brand did you buy?

  11. Smudga permalink
    September 28, 2006 8:59 am

hey all… I bought a Bluetooth usb stick from PC World and it works fine (if but a little slow) with my vk4000. I’ve since bought a 1gig micro SD card and I now transfer everything from my PC to my phone and vice-versa using that – music, images etc… I haven’t tried any java apps or games yet, but I will within the next few days.

  12. September 28, 2006 9:30 am

    Hi, Smudga.
If you could tell us the actual brands of the Bluetooth USB stick and the SD card that work an awful lot of us owners would be very grateful.

    hey Bob,

I have managed to track down a source of USB cables that fit the VK4000. they are at http://www.m-99.co.uk.

Unfortunately when I plug it in @@@@@ger all happens. so I am going to take your advice and try a minicard.

Anyone know of a source in UK to obtain a new silver battery for the VK4000?

  17. November 5, 2006 12:11 pm

    Very interesting site.

I have a VK4000 and use it with my Mac and a Belkin USB Bluetooth 2.0 adaptor purchased from Dixons. The Bluetooth is not a full implementation. My Mac shows the Bluetooth on the VK4000 to have the following services:
    Device Name: VK4000

    Device Address: 00-16-b0-1f-ce-da
    Device Type: Phone
Device Services: AUDIO Gateway, Voice Gateway, OBEX Object Push

Now compare the services with a Sony K608i
    Device Address: 00-12-ee-22-41-dc
    Device Type: Phone
Device Services: , Dial-up Networking, Serial Port, HF Voice Gateway, HS Voice Gateway, OBEX Object Push, OBEX File Transfer, OBEX SyncML Client, OBEX IrMC Sync Server, Mouse & Keyboard

As you can see the Sony has a full bluetooth implementation.

I can use Bluetooth to transfer files but at the princely speed of 8KB per second. (Sony K608 and even T610 transfer at 48KB per second!!!)

Regarding the Memory card I bought the following package and it works fine:
    http://mobymemory.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SDSDQ%2D1024%5FBundleBuy

Only issue is that memory card sometimes shows full on Mac when I get to about 150 files, but adding sub folders cures that problem.

If any one needs anymore info please contact me

Ihave found nothiong that will work in converting INTO .mjp format and as i have not found a way to sort it out i have no idea were the video clips go.

    Guys,

I wish I had found this site earlier, I now know that I’m in good company and not as bone-headed as I first thought.. I also would have saved 21 quid by not buying an incompatible SD card!
I first got a USB cable to connect PC to vk4000 from speedydelivery.co.uk, which although advertised as a Data suite (ie with software) came without any. I now see that there isn’t any! When I contacted virginmobile about it they said that they planned to stock it ‘soon’. That’s as much use as a one-legged man in an @rse-kicking competiton if you ask me. I also bought at the same time from speedydelivery.co.uk their Universal Bluetooth Dongle (£8.95) which works OK, but as Charlie above says, downloads pathetically slowly. Also it only boasts one service, object push.
I then got a 1Gb micro SD card from memoryforless.com – a Toshiba micro-s which isn’t recognised when I insert into the phone. I see others have had the same problem. Charlie – was the card you got from http://mobymemory.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SDSDQ%2D1024%5FBundleBuy a 1Gb?
or can anyone recommend a 1Gb card that works?
Keep up the good work guys, forum sites like these are great

    Hey guys,
I have only had the phone since chrismas so am still a bit of a rookie, but i cant seem to get the bluetooth to work, everytime i search for people with bluetooth the phone says there are no paired devices. Other people cant see my bluetooth as switched on either, and i have turned it on and i have set it to show phone. Do any of you know why this is??

The other thing is connectivity to the PC, my old phone had a USB connector cable, is there no such thing for the VK4000? As my PC does not have a card reader i was hoping for an option not involving in me having to buy one, but most people on here seem to suggest the bluetooth USB is not worth buying so is there any other options such as a USB connector cable.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I can transfer files from phone to pc via reader but m not the other way round. Also I get screen freeze and sometimes my bluetooth fails to work at all. I contacted virgin and they sent me a new phone next morning (very impressive service) but now that phone is doing the same

I’m so glad it’s not me being retarded. I mean i generally don’t get phones and thought the vk4000 was a nice little phone, it had what i wanted, mp3 and a camera… Except, I can only get mp3’s off my brother via his bluetooth, I finally tracked down usb lead off ”speedydelivery.co.uk’ (which took a week and cost me £8) …got it to the pc…and it doesn’t work!

    so yeah, I’m pi$$ed

  31. February 21, 2007 6:19 pm

All I can say to the previous writers is my Sandisk 512MB micro SD card works perfectly.

Maybe I didn’t phrase that well..lol What I meant was, I took a pic of my daughter and husband and would like to use their pics to appear when they ring me. I did manage to do it, but each time I edit each one they both come up with the same pic. The menu is very confusing and the manual is even more confusing. The manual mentions placing contacts in groups, so I did, placing daughter and hubby into family group, but when I try to asign a pic for each one it changes the whole group
Confused yet? Cos I am! LOL

I think you mean “Sandisk”, Gavin, and that means we’ve found that this brand of 512Mb and 1Gb mini SD cards work with our phone.

If you don’t have a card reader built into your PC they’re not expensive. This site http://www.qfonic.com/index.php?cPath=108 has a range.

Everyone is asking about USB, Bluetooth, SD Cards and the like, I just want to know something basic, how do I turn the b****y predictive text OFF

  38. March 19, 2007 8:54 am

    Hi Gwigfa.
Texting has been covered on another post here but, to answer your question, the blue-green, left-hand telephone key switches between predictive, normal text, numbers and punctuation marks. With predictive texting, the up/down scroll changes between upper/lower case versions of the selected word while left/right scroll offers words before or after that word (alphabetically).
    Hope this has helped.

  41. March 22, 2007 10:53 pm

    Hi again, Gwigfa.
On the first day I had my VK400 my son easily transferred a photo from his phone to mine by bluetooth but, exactly the same as the bluetooth dongle for your PC, it doesn’t seem to work in the other direction.
I don’t think anyone has found a USB lead and software that works, despite claims in advertising.
About the only transfer method proved to work is a Sandisk mini SD card.

  44. April 3, 2007 4:23 pm

    Hi, Alex.
    The first bit is easy.
Your micro CD card comes in a holder which acts as a standard size SD card for standard card readers.
You need a decent thumbnail: pull the Micro card out of the full size one. Open the socket on the L.H. side of the VK4000. Push the micro card in with thumbnail (printing on top) until it clicks. Close the plastic on the socket. To remove the card, push it in gently until it clicks and pops out (just enough to grasp with thumbnail).
No idea about the second part; I think we’re all wondering about that.

  49. April 12, 2007 12:37 pm

I get the impression the phone doesn’t have separate folders for things: it just recognises certain file types. If you copy a file of unknown type to the phone it takes up memory but doesn’t show up on any menus, Beth.
Do you know what type of file you downloaded (e.f. .gif)?

I am using a TRUST bluetooth 2.0 EDR USB adapter £18.00 from ASDA for two way connection and transfer of pictures and mp3. Still having problem sending video to phone any help would be appreciated. Last post battery problem poss. old battery put in phone or you have to make sure phone is turned off when charging or battery will not fully charge.

It should be of help to anyone who hasn’t given up after spending money on things that don’t work. I think you’re the first person to say they’ve managed 2-way bluetooth transfer. Well done.
As far as video is concerned, the phone only recognises .mjp format (see post 19 above). Any uploaded videos in other formats will, I believe, take up memory but not be recognised and may be impossible to delete.

A couple of answers – VK 4000 battery life – thought my battery was exhausted and bought another, that was the same. Contacted Virgin and they said it was the phone, they replaced it in less than 24 hours, delivered to door, it was under warranty though. Micro SD, I could not get mine to read until I just about pushed it through the phone, it is a 2GB Sansdisc. Wonderful forum.

To be honest, Kayla, I wouldn’t recommend you to buy a VK4000 – unless you just want a phone.
Pictures are low-res, video is without sound and in a format nothing else uses, one brand of bluetooth PC adaptor works and one make of micro SD card. Internal memory is limited.
There are other posts on this blog in the VK4000 section you might want to read. They don’t have as many replies but there’s some useful stuff there. Good luck.

Would you recommend me to get a VK 4000 or a completely different phone. After reading the comments on here I’m really not sure!

    Thank-you

    And great forum
It really helps understand the problems people are having and problems other people could have!

If you want a pretty little slide phone which works well in the UK, USA and a few other countries and you can find it at a good price then the VK4000 is for you.
If you want to take photos or video, if you want to play music or videos on the phone then look elsewhere. There are much better alternatives.
Strangely, no-one has commented on its WAP/internet abilities. Perhaps no-one has tried, seeing as how it fails at most other things.

    Ok thank-you

Well I love taking pictures and sometimes videos but I don’t often play videos. I would love to be able to play music though…

would you recommend vk4000 or another one

If another one then could you give me any ones to loook for?

Thanks for all your help x

Believe me, Beckie, you wouldn’t love the low res. photos it takes or the low res, no sound videos it records that can’t be converted to play in any other phone or any PC software.
I hesitate to recommend another phone, not having any first-hand knowledge of any. I suggest you Google phrases like “best mobile phone” on the web, or try Yahoo Answers.

Anyone managed to find any links for any .mjp to a recognizable format. Have been searching all over the net but all links to conversion software are old and dead :S . Ive had my VK4000 for about 18months now and never had a problem with it. I think its a great little phone and its almost indestructible. Have just got myself a K800i (which im very impressed with) on contract now though and am trying to get all the .mjp files converted so i can stick em on my phone or computer as my mate needs the VK.

    Cheers

Hi. Ive just bought a 1GB micro SD card for my VK4000 after buying a dongle that didnt work. BUT, the micro SD card doesnt work either :(. i took the phone into a virgin store and they said that they recommend using a 512MB card in the phone >> BUT WHY DOESNT IT SAY THAT ON THE BOX??? As it is still under warrantee im getting another one, but they reckon the same problem is going to occur again. Plus the video has no sound, so I think i may just get a new phone >> not a VK one.

I bet you wish you had found this site before you bought the VK4000, Soph.
I can really sympathise with you. If you read some of the other comments and posts on here you’ll see that Sandisk SD cards work and very little else.

Yeah, thats what I thought. Im gonna look at these kind of sites before I buy a phone now. =D

…also, my SD card isnt a sandisk, but I cant be bothered to get one when I have a perfectly good one atm. Anyway there are other things that I dont like about this phone so ill just get a new phone which my SD card will work with.

if u r having trouble with transferring photos try a bluetooth adapter.

  91. August 29, 2007 6:21 pm

    Sorry, Mr Nobody,
If you check the above comments you’ll find that most makes of Bluetooth don’t work with this phone. Are you saying you’ve found a brand that works? If so, tell us, please.

    Hi Driver Rob
My VK 4000 is really good nd memory card works…but their are some factors which have been stated above:
-Bluetooth dosent show the names when showing devices found
-32 mb internal memory when they said 128 mb
    -Only 1 game
    -Video dosent have sound
    -Factory set dosent work
-Dosent let me delete files in Other -Which has hogged 10 mb
    Help please?

  93. September 25, 2007 9:01 pm

Sorry, Sarah, but most of these problems have already been mentioned.
Bluetooth is unpredictable and is inwards only; no output.
Most of the 128 Mb is already taken; that’s why an SD card is recommended.
Yep, just one game; crappy, isn’t it?
Yep, no video sound and the format isn’t compatible with anything else plus no conversion possible.
I haven’t tried the factory reset, surprised it doesn’t work.
If the files are on your SD card, delete them using your PC. If you’ve transferred files from the card to your phone’s RAM and they’re not of a recognised type you’ve had it.

    Hi Alex.
You’re not alone in this problem.
It http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/19/33629439-bluetooth-driver-xp-vista-compatibility.html looks like you’ll have to buy a new one, I’m afraid.
    Good luck.

i downloaded something off the internet and it said i didnt have enough credit so when i top up will i get it :s this phone is crappy!!

  100. May 21, 2008 10:33 pm

If you put enough credit on your phone I dare say you can download anything you want to.
Yes it is a crappy phone. Texting is OK. Voice calls are OK, but I wish the volume was louder. Everything else ranges from poor to absolutely useless, as you’ve probably read on this blog.

  101. July 16, 2008 8:25 pm

    Its Crap Basically
Used To Be Able To Put In My Own wallpaper now i have to use the crappy built in ones (the fishs)also there is nothing i can do on this phone. the battery is crap . dont buy this phone in 1 month you hate it as i have found out for the year ive had it. the video doesnt have sound. i rang virgin about this and they said its ment to be like this. well the 1st 3 months i could use my own wallpapers now its the flamming animation of fishes which is crap as anything.

I think we’re all in agreement there. Stewph.

I managed to lose/mislay mine two weeks or so ago. Now I don’t care; I’ve replaced it with a Sony Ericsson W810i. It’s so much better than the VK4000 and I got it for £69.99. Brilliant.

To all my readers: throw the VK4000 away and get a decent phone.
