Higher road tax on 4×4 cars ?

August 7, 2006

I don’t think this (possible) UK government policy has been thought through.

Everyone has a pretty good idea of what we mean by a ‘4×4 vehicle’ but can it be defined in law?

Is it a car with 4 wheel drive (includes at least one model of Porsche, Audi, Nissan and Mitsubishi sports cars)?

Is it a car with selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive?

Is it a car that weighs over 2 tonnes/carries more than 5 people/ has high ground clearance/does less than 25 mpg/emits a certain level of pollutants?

Or is it some combination of the above?

Do you drive a car that fits most or all of these criteria? How would you greet an extra £100 a year? How about an extra £1,000 a year as some have suggested?
