John Prescott or Charles Clarke – who should resign?

April 30, 2006

Chalk and cheese, as far as I'm concerned.

John Prescott's sexual behaviour is none of my/our business. I thought he was clever enough to know that any such behaviour could not be kept secret for ever and that, when it came out, it could ruin his personal life. But that's his problem. It should not (does not?) affect his ability to do his job.

Charles Clarke, on the other hand, has clearly failed to manage properly the matter of convicted aliens. His department may be large. His roles may be difficult and complicated. Immigration and law and order may be  almost impossibly difficult to manage but that is what he and his department are paid to do. He and they are not doing it. End of story.

Unless you think different.

I agree about Prescott but Clarke should definitely go. Law and order is fundamental to his job role. He knew about this problem last August and was informed by an audit. Even four weeks ago before it really became public, he did nothing. The sooner he is out the faster someone can get to grips with the problem.
