Not really. Google is a business, not a government organisation or mouthpiece.
As their press statement said, either they censored themselves or the Chinese authorities did it for them. Doing it for themselves made the searches faster. Yahoo have, apparently done something similar. Slow searches make for an unappealing search engine. Google were already losing market share to Beijing-based rival Baidu.com and to Yahoo.
At least all the attendant publicity brings to the World’s attention just how China is stifling free speech and information in its country. That can only be for the good as China attempts to compete with more developed nations on so many fronts.
